Conehead (Project #24, April 18)
The Conehead is the next series of critter based PCBs (past ones are The Lady, The Gent, and The Monarch). It's an audio circuit that synthesises the sound of a cricket. It uses three oscillators interacting with each other to create the distinctive sound. Using a small speaker and a phototransistor, the cricket will change its chirping frequency depending on the amount of light it 'sees'.

Boldport projects never fail to inspire some new learning. In the case it introduced me to Pure Data - a pretty amazing open source visual programming language for multimedia. I reproduced the chirp.pd model and added a few more controls to make it easier to play around with. Hereās a quick example of the sounds produced with different settings:

My second month of Boldport Club is #24 The Conehead. Itās a custom PCB design of a cricket and it chirps based on how much light the āeyeā can see. According to video timestamps it took about an hour to assemble the kit and it was a lot of fun using the electronics components in different ways. See my blog for more.
