IxpandO (Project #16, August 2017)
IxpandO is a 16 bit I²C input/output expansion board based on Microchip's MCP23017. When you run out of inputs or outputs for your project, use this project to connect up to 16 of them through and I²C interface.

Here’s a simple bash script that exercises the LEDs and reads the DIP switches on IxpandO. I’ve tested it on a BeagleBone, but it should run on a RPI as well if you change the $BUS number.

My IxpandO build. I decided to start with the default setup of 8 inputs (switches) and 8 outputs (LEDs), and an Arduino sketch to demonstrate digital output and interrupt-driven input with the Wire library. All notes, schematics and code are in the LEAP repo on GitHub. Here’s a quick demo:
